These Hips Are Free Hips

If only all women could embrace the powers of their bodies to write and mean poems like “homage to my hips” by Lucille Clifton.  As a born Midwesterner, I have often felt like my widespread hips are a dead giveaway that I’m not from the bred-prim and properly exercised megalopolis of the East where I now reside.  Disadvantage: skinny jeans; Advantage: hip-checking.

Midwestern Ass

diet, workout, run away from where you come

let your hips fade away from the new façade

’cause as the other girls grin, you’ll stop looking within

instead, attempt to melt the lumps you were dealt

try to fit in, in the East, where big butts are teased

unlike at home where mounds make a bone

Hips Hips Hooray!
